Have you ever wondered what it’s like to traverse the entire length of Pakistan in a single go? Driving from the coastal metropolis of Karachi to the serene, green capital of Islamabad is more than just a commute; it is a 1,500km odyssey through the heart of South Asia.
Recently, I took on the challenge of a 22-hour continuous drive from Karachi to Islamabad. While I am usually found in the kitchen as a “Flavor Architect” at Sister’s Cuisines, this road trip allowed me to experience the authentic heritage and geography that inspires my cooking every day.
For anyone planning a Pakistan road trip, the infrastructure has seen incredible upgrades. To make this 22-hour journey successful, we utilized the most efficient routes:
M-9 Motorway (Karachi to Hyderabad): The gateway out of the south.
N-5 National Highway: The stretch through interior Sindh (Moro and Sukkur).
M-5 Motorway (Sukkur to Multan): A world-class driving experience through South Punjab.
M-4 & M-2 Motorways: Connecting Faisalabad and Lahore directly to the Margalla hills of Islamabad.
While some speed through in 16–18 hours, a non-stop drive from Karachi to Islamabad requires strategic breaks for safety. As a chef, my breaks were focused on “Roadside Dhaba” culture—sampling the local tea and snacks that define the travel experience in Pakistan.
As the guardian of authentic South Asian flavor at Sister’s Cuisines, I couldn’t help but notice the shift in the culinary landscape as we moved North:
Sindh: The spicy, aromatic roadside biryanis.
Punjab: The rich, buttery dal and lassi at the M-5 rest areas.
Islamabad: The sophisticated fusion of traditional and modern palates.
This journey reinforced my mission: to weave time-honored techniques into the modern international kitchen. Every mile driven was a lesson in the diversity of our heritage.
If you are planning this Karachi to Islamabad travel experience, keep these essentials in mind:
Vehicle Preparation: Ensure your tires and engine oil are checked. 22 hours of continuous running is a heavy load.
M-Tag is Mandatory: Ensure your M-Tag is recharged for a seamless experience at the toll plazas.
Safety First: Avoid the N-5 stretch between Hyderabad and Sukkur at night if possible.
Stay Hydrated: Keep plenty of water and homemade snacks from the Sister’s Cuisines kitchen to keep your energy up!
At Sister’s Cuisines, we believe that every dish tells a story. I am Nabila Imran, dedicated to safeguarding the culinary legacy of our mothers and grandmothers. Whether I am perfecting a complex traditional curry or driving 1,400km across the country, my goal is to bring the warmth and expertise of our heritage directly to your family table.
