Assalam-o-Alaikum, family! Welcome back to the travel diaries section of Sister’s Cuisines with me, Nabila Imran. Today, we are leaving the crisp, cold breeze of Istanbul behind and heading down south to the stunning, sun-kissed paradise of Antalya!
When you hear the name Antalya, beaches and luxury resorts usually come to mind. However, hidden right in the middle of this city lies a unique, natural paradise that completely steals the show. In this article, I am taking you on a deeply personal and brutally honest tour of the breathtaking Duden Waterfalls and the historic alleys of Kaleiçi (The Old City). If you are planning a trip to Turkey in 2026, grab a cup of tea and take notes—this guide is made just for you!
The Duden River originates far up in the Taurus Mountains, flowing through underground channels before split-crashing into two spectacular locations: Upper Duden and Lower Duden.
Our first stop was Upper Duden. The moment you step into this area, the noise of the city completely vanishes. You are instantly surrounded by lush greenery, the soothing chirping of birds, and an incredibly refreshing coolness in the air.
Duden is not just a scenic view; it is steeped in ancient history. Here is a quick breakdown of what makes this landscape so sacred and historically significant:
While walking through the park gardens, our tour guide shared a fascinating aspect of local Turkish life regarding their famous street animals.
In Turkey, you are strictly forbidden from disturbing or mistreating street cats and dogs. Almost every single street features custom-built, insulated cat houses equipped with fresh food and clean water. The animals roam around completely stress-free. In fact, if anyone is caught mistreating or kicking an animal, they face heavy financial penalties and up to three years of imprisonment. It is a beautiful system of urban coexistence that truly warms the heart.
As you navigate the park’s cobblestone paths under massive grapevine canopies, you will encounter local vendors selling everything from Turkish ice cream to traditional evil-eye souvenir bags.
I stopped by an old vendor brewing Traditional Turkish Coffee right in the hot sand over burning coals—a process very similar to how we roast chickpeas back home in Pakistan!
Honest Review: To be completely transparent, I personally do not enjoy the taste of Turkish coffee or tea. It tastes almost identical to standard gas-stove coffee, with only a very subtle hint of coal smoke flavor.
Experiencing the waterfalls reinforced my core travel philosophy: always prioritize natural spaces over commercial centers. When my husband and I travel, our goal is to absorb the peace of nature. Walking through massive shopping malls gives me immense anxiety, even back home in Karachi. Ninety percent of the time, my husband handles our market errands, or I rely heavily on online shopping to avoid the chaotic heat. Give me a natural waterfall or a quiet mountain viewpoint, and I can happily sit there from morning until night.
Next, we made our way to Lower Duden. To reach the premier viewing decks, you have to descend through a massive, underground cave system. While it was quite hot outside, the interior of the cave was exceptionally cool and refreshing.
Our afternoon concluded with a stroll through Kaleiçi, the historic Old Town of Antalya. The narrow streets display beautifully preserved architectural layers showcasing distinct Roman and Greek historical influences.
We browsed local markets filled with authentic Turkish carpets, prayer mats, and hand-painted ceramic platters. I also stopped by a premium jewelry boutique to look at Sultanite—the famous, authentic Turkish gemstone that magically changes color depending on the lighting.
Perhaps the most jaw-dropping site in the Old Town was a local restaurant that had installed a complete glass floor directly over an active archaeological excavation site. Standing on the glass, you can look straight down into the ancient foundations of the city, perfectly bridging the past with the modern world.
With the sun beginning to set, we headed down the ancient stone steps toward the historic harbor. Our next adventure? Boarding a scenic boat cruise to view this magnificent coastline directly from the Mediterranean Sea!
