TRAVELING TO SHOGRAN

Shogran & Siri Paye: Your Ultimate 2026 Travel Guide

High above the clouds in the Kaghan Valley of Pakistan lies Shogran, a plateau so green and serene that it feels like a piece of heaven fallen to earth. At an altitude of 7,749 feet, Shogran is more than just a hill station; it is a sanctuary of pine forests, crisp mountain air, and the gateway to the legendary Siri Paye Meadows.

Whether you are a solo backpacker, a couple on a honeymoon, or a family seeking a break from the city heat, this guide covers everything you need to plan your 2026 adventure.

🛣️ Getting There: The Journey to the Clouds

The trip to Shogran is as scenic as the destination itself. Most travelers start from Islamabad or Lahore.

  • The Route: Take the Hazara Motorway (E35) through Abbottabad and Mansehra to Balakot. From Balakot, continue toward Kiwai.
  • The Kiwai Junction: Kiwai is your pit stop for the famous “Waterfall Tea.” From here, the road splits. A steep, 7km winding track leads up to Shogran.
  • Transport Choice:
    • Cars: In summer, most modern cars (Corolla, Civic, etc.) can reach Shogran village. However, the road is steep and narrow; ensure your brakes and radiator are in top condition.
    • Jeeps (4×4): Mandatory if you are visiting in winter (due to snow) or if you plan to go beyond Shogran to Siri Paye. A round trip from Kiwai to Shogran usually costs between PKR 3,500 – 5,000.

🌲 Top Attractions & Experiences

  1. Siri Paye Meadows

The crown jewel of Shogran. Located 6km further up from the main village, these alpine pastures sit at 10,000 feet. The reflection of the towering Makra Peak in the small ponds (Siri Lake) is a sight you will never forget.

  • Jeep Fare: Approx. PKR 6,000 – 8,000 for a round trip from Shogran.
  • Activity: Horse riding, hiking, and the “iconic swing” overlooking the valley.
  1. Makra Peak Trek

For the adventurous, the trek from Paye Meadows to the summit of Makra Peak (3,885m) takes about 7–8 hours round trip. The view from the top spans across KP and Azad Kashmir.

  1. Pine Park Forest

The forest surrounding the famous Pine Park Hotel offers serene walking trails. It’s perfect for a morning stroll among towering deodar and pine trees.

  1. Sharan Forest (Day Trip)

Located across the valley from Shogran, Sharan is a hidden gem accessible via a jeep track from Paras. It’s denser, quieter, and home to beautiful wooden glamping pods.

🏨 Where to Stay in 2026

Shogran has evolved, offering everything from rustic huts to luxury resorts:

  • Luxury: Pine Park Hotel (best lawns), Arcadian Spruce Woods, and Cedar Wood Resort.
  • Mid-Range: Lalazar Family Resort, Hill Top Hotel, and Spruce Resort.
  • Budget: Dozens of guest houses in the main Shogran Bazar offer rooms starting from PKR 4,000 – 6,000 per night.

💡 Pro Tips for 2026 Travelers

  • Cash is King: ATMs are almost non-existent in Shogran. Withdraw sufficient cash in Balakot or Mansehra.
  • Packing Essentials: Even in the peak of June, the temperature at Siri Paye can drop unexpectedly. Always pack a windbreaker or a light fleece.
  • Connectivity: Telenor and Zong generally provide the best coverage, but don’t expect high-speed 4G everywhere. Use this time to “unplug.”
  • Respect Nature: Shogran is a sensitive ecological zone. Avoid littering and stay on marked trails to protect the meadows.

📍 Suggested 3-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Drive from Islamabad to Shogran. Stop at Kiwai Waterfall for lunch. Check into your hotel and enjoy the sunset from the Pine Park lawns.
  • Day 2: Hire a 4×4 Jeep for Siri Paye Meadows. Spend the day exploring the ponds and meadows. Try horse riding or a short hike toward Makra Peak.
  • Day 3: A slow morning in the Shogran forest. Shop for local handicrafts in the bazaar before driving back to Islamabad.
